A letter from Superintendent Dr. Judy S. Grissom
Have you ever heard the saying that “our children are our future” and wondered what that means? It is as if we are preparing our children to one day become the leaders, the movers and shakers, in our community.
The Rowan-Salisbury School System is fortunate to have many children that are modeling leadership and making our community a better place to live right now! These are students who enjoy becoming actively involved in community projects and service, and enjoy helping others. These are students who respond to the needs in their environment without the added incentive of receiving extra credit for a course or for meeting the requirements for an award or recognition. They do service because this is what they do. They are leaders.
In a day and time when many of our children appear to bring negative attention to themselves and to the community, it is indeed an honor to put the spotlight on those children that go beyond expectations, beyond mediocrity, to discover authenticity.
Service Above Self is a program that recognizes our students for volunteering and demonstrating the differences of selfishness and selflessness, as they become role models for not only their peers, but for all of us.
The Rowan County United Way in conjunction with the Rowan Rotary sponsors this program to recognize these inspiring students. I wish to extend many thanks to all those who make Service Above Self possible for our children and our community.
Dr. Judy S. Grissom
Superintendent, Rowan-Salisbury School System
